The National Food Institute (DTU Food) invites applications for a PhD position in multi-extraction of bioactive compounds from macroalgae. The successful applicant will be based in the research group for Bioactives – Analysis and Applications, National Food Institute at the Technical University of Denmark. The research group has research on bioactive compounds from micro and macro algae as one of its focus areas.



The PhD project is part of a larger project funded by the Danish “GUDP” programme and will involve close collaboration with the industrial partners CPKelco, GEA and Third Wave Nutrition.



Responsibilities and tasks

The PhD study will focus on development of multi-extraction processes for three different seaweed species. The main focus will be on protein and hydrocolloid extraction. The PhD student will develop processes in lab scale at DTU and will also participate in scale-up experiments at CPKelco and GEA. Apart from the process development work, the PhD study will also include analytical tasks such as analysis of content of proteins, pigments and polyphenols as well as analysis of functional properties of proteins.



Qualifications

The candidate is a motivated scientist with relevant experience from a MSc Study programme and possibly from subsequent employments. Ideally, you have a master in food science/technology, chemical engineering, analytical chemistry or equivalent.

Furthermore the ideal candidate has:

•Experience with extraction and analysis of bioactive compounds from macro algae

•Good laboratory skills

•Good collaboration and communication skills (written and oral English)

•Structured and analytical working approach



Approval and Enrolment

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in a degree programme at the Department. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
