Department of Food and Resource Economics (IFRO) is offering a number of PhD scholarships primarily based on externally funded projects from 1 May 2016 or thereafter.

IFRO carries out pure basic and applied social science research and have a number of educational and public-sector service responsibilities. In particular, IFRO performs research within the disciplines of economics, sociology and ethics, but we are characterized by a high involvement in interdisciplinary research at both international and national levels.

The relevant research areas for the PhD scholarships are expected to fall within the following thematic areas:

  • Environment and natural resources, which includes the economic regulation of environmental issues and natural resource use, environmental valuation methods, energy economics, behavioural economics, environmental sociology and governance, conflict resolution, climate change policies, forest economics and management, fishery economics, biodiversity conservation, and environmental ethics.
  • Production, markets and policy, which include production economics, applied micro economics, efficiency analysis, innovation, management science, organisation and ownership, policy design and analysis, business economics, agricultural and food economics and policy, trade negotiations and agreements, and the impact of international trade on food and natural resources.
  • Global development, which includes development economics and policy, political economy, governance problems, measuring the effectiveness of development assistance, the alleviation of poverty, living conditions, the impact of climate change and ways to adapt to it, natural resource management, and conflict resolution.
  • Consumption, bioethics and regulation, which includes food economics, food sociology and policy, law, consumer behavior and policy, nutritional policy studies and nutritional sociology, public health economics and policy in both the human and the animal fields. It also includes ethics and value aspects of food production, nutritional policy, animal husbandry, and the management of the environment and of natural resources.

The IFRO PhD fellowships are available to candidates with research projects relating to at least one of these areas.

Job description

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:

  • To manage and carry through your research project
  • Attend PhD courses
  • Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
  • Teach and disseminate your research
  • To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
  • Work for the department

Formal requirements

Applicants should hold an MSc degree related to the thematic areas mentioned above with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 306,667 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 42,361). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Interview Committee. The applicants will be notified of the composition of the committee and the final selection of a successful candidate will be made by the Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the assessment committee and the interview committee.
