Job offer description

The NanoGeoScience group applies nanotechniques to investigate the interactions between fluids (water, oil, gas) and natural materials in soil, sediments and rocks and then uses the new, fundamental understanding to solve some of society’s problems, such as ensuring clean water, safer storage of waste, more oil from spent reservoirs, converting CO2 back to rocks and revealing the secrets of biomineralisation, i.e. how organisms make minerals, such as bones, teeth and shells.  We are about 50 researchers and support staff working together in a dynamic, international and interdisciplinary environment. The NanoGeoScience team consists of chemists, physicists, biologists, geologists, mineralogists, mathematicians and engineers.

Requirements:

- PhD or equivalent in Chemistry, specialty in classical mineral-solution geochemistry

- extensive research experience in solution and surface chemistry in aqueous systems, speciation and surface complexation; species adsorption, incorporation; growth inhibition and enhancement

- solid experience as a research scientist and project leader

- expertise in thermodynamics and kinetics

- experience with samples from nature as well as model systems

- extensive experience in modelling geochemistry data; skills in programming

- interdisciplinary background, experience with natural (geological, biological, geochemical) materials

- solid mathematical background

- experience collaborating across disciplines and across countries

- experienced and effective in writing manuscripts

- experience guiding younger researchers, particularly PhD students and postdoctoral fellows

- interpersonal skills, effectiveness in teamwork

- excellent presentation skills; participation at international conferences

- preferably fluent in English

Duties include:

- carry out research projects alone or with other group members

- coordinate activities involving surface complexation and crystal growth

- lead projects aimed at understanding the fundamental properties and behaviour of mineral surfaces in contact with aqueous solution over temperatures and pressures common in the Earth's crust.

- guide, advise and teach students and postdoctoral fellows.

- interface with theoreticians and other experimentalists to produce interactive, cross-disciplinary research in the topics of the NanoGeoScience group portfolio
