Job offer description

Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Macroecology

at the Center of Macroecology, Evolution and Climate,

The Natural History Museum of Denmark,

Faculty of Science

University of Copenhagen

A tenure-track faculty position in macroecology at the level of Assistant professor is available from 1 May 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful applicant will be located within the Center for Macroecology, Evolution, and Climate (CMEC) (http://www.macroecology.ku.dk/) at the Section of Biodiversity, the Natural History Museum of Denmark (SNM), the University of Copenhagen (http://snm.ku.dk/english/).

Within CMEC and SNM, the successful candidate is expected to collaborate with the faculty, staff, and students on a variety of diverse research projects and to participate in institutional service and university teaching. We are especially interested in attracting applicants working in the area of macroecology focusing on questions related to the determinants of large-scale patterns of species richness. This research could also address underlying questions related to large-scale macroecological patterns of species distribution, geographical ranges, and species assemblages. Note that this is not a curatorial position, but instead a research and teaching position. However, curatorial skills with a particular taxon will not be held against any applicant.

The successful applicant will have:

  • An international research profile within macroecology.
  • A strong background in natural history and expertise in a taxon or system that allows for testing of general theory.
  • Excellent analytical, spatial statistical and modeling skills (e.g. null modeling, predictive modeling, simulation modeling).
  • The ability to establish a thriving research program, as documented by publications in leading journals and obvious plans for future research.
  • Evidence of the ability to obtain competitive research grants.
  • A research background in line with the profile of the Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate and the Section of Biodiversity at the museum.
  • Experience directing undergraduate or graduate student research, or display the potential to do so.

Duties include:

    • Building a thriving research program, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff.
    • Teaching and developing undergraduate and graduate courses in the curriculum of biology, including the existing Macroecology course as well as establishing a new course in spatial statistics.
    • Participating through research, administration, and teaching in national and international programmes in which the Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate is involved, and in initiation and development of such programmes at the museum.
    • Supervising of MSc projects and PhD students
    • Participating in institutional service and other tasks requested by Center and Museum.
    • Collaborating with colleagues within CMEC, SNM, and the University to address the most exciting questions in macroecology and to assist Professor Carsten Rahbek in leading the larger center-wide macroecological research themes within CMEC.

CMEC and the museum are international, and the day-to-day working language is English. At any given time, CMEC consists of ~50% international PhD, postdocs, and faculty. Copenhagen is an international city and is ranked as the one of the most livable cities in the world. There are numerous international schools to go along with the excellent public education system, state-supported healthcare, and generous holiday and pension packages. The Office of International Staff and Mobility (http://ism.ku.dk/) facilitates recruitment of international staff.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field. Teaching qualifications are not required, but documented teaching experience will be considered and viewed positively. Additionally, ability to attract external funding, managerial skills, out-reach, and innovative qualifications of applicants will also be considered as well as evidence of the potential to collaborate within the over-arching research themes of CMEC.

During the first two years of your employment as tenure track assistant professor, you must complete the formal pedagogical training program for assistant professors at the Faculty of Science which is also needed for you to qualify for a permanent position. Your performance will be evaluated after no more than six years of employment and, if the ‘final appraisal’ is positive, you will be employed as Associate Professor.

The position is open from 1 May 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter. Inquiries concerning the position can be made to Professor Carsten Rahbek, Director of The Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate, Universitetsparken 15, DK-2100 Copenhagen, Denmark. E-mail: crahbek@snm.ku.dk

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
