The Center for Biological Sequence Analysis at the Department of Systems Biology at the Technical University of Denmark is seeking a highly motivated candidate for a senior researcher position within bioinformatics. We are in particular looking for a lead Engineer for the Danish ELIXIR Node.



Responsibilities and tasks

ELIXIR (1) the infrastructure for biological information, is building a discovery portal (2) for bioinformatics resources world-wide, built upon a federated curation of a wide range of key resources, including analytical tools and data services. At the heart of this effort is a registry of essential scientific and technical information, conforming to a consistent syntactic and semantic standard. ELIXIR is supporting resource providers, including research infrastructures, institutes, projects and individuals, to contribute to an emerging large-scale community curation effort that will ensure comprehensive content and high quality annotations.



The Danish ELIXIR node is seeking to recruit an experienced engineer / scientist to contribute to the technical implementation of the registry and build community around it. This demanding and varied role will include taking a senior role in the curation activities, software engineering and collaborations required to build a sustainable registry that matches the requirements of contributors and scientist end-users around the world.



Curation activities will include:

1.build and lead a Curation Task Force to drive registry content expansion

2.lead the development & maintenance of the EDAM ontology (3) in support of registry growth

3.lead curation and technical workshops



Software engineering activities will include:

1.prioritise registry features according to the needs of content providers and users, oversee the technical implementation

2.coordinate development of technical interoperability with providers, workbenches, publishers etc.

3.design, prototype and develop software components



Collaborations and communication will include:

1.liaise with Registry stakeholders and other collaborations with institutions, community projects, publishers, funding agencies etc

2.develop and implement strategy, e.g. for funding, communications and registry growth, ensuring compatibility with other Research Infrastructures and initiatives internationally

3.oversee the registry User Experience (UX) including UX evaluation, user support, documentation and training



Qualifications

Candidates must

•hold a PhD degree or equivalent as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as Researcher or Postdoc.



Further qualifications:

Applicants must have a history in bioinformatics and possess the skills and experience commensurate to the role, including:

•data curation including annotation using controlled vocabularies

•ontology development and a broad familiarity with bioinformatics concepts

•software engineering, including software development process, programming and schema design

•managing technical projects in a production/service environment

•distributed collaborative projects and connections within the bioinformatics community



Assessment

In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to:

•scientific production and research potential at international level

•innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas

•the ability to communicate at all levels such as the provision of scientific advice to public sector authorities

•the ability to promote and utilize research results

•an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience

•the ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation

Salary and terms of employment

This is a full-time position initially for a period of three years.



The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The Center for Biological Sequence Analysis at the Technical University of Denmark was formed in 1993, and conducts basic research in the fields of bioinformatics and systems biology. The center is divided into twelve specialist research groups, has a highly multi-disciplinary profile (biologists, biochemists, MDs, physicists, statisticians, and computer scientists) with a ratio of 2:1 of bio-to-nonbio backgrounds.
