Job offer description

Center for non-coding RNA in Technology and Health (RTH) (http://rth.dk) at Department of Veterinary Clinical and Animal Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, has an open postdoctoral position for infrastructure bioinformatics for non-coding and structured RNA analysis. We are looking for an enthusiastic and hard-working person to join our team as soon as possible. The project is financed by Danish Elixir Node for Bioinformatics Tools.

Background

Non-coding RNAs often form structures essential for their function. They make up a highly abundant class of genes that play numerous important roles in the cell and in disease. There exists a variety of computational RNA tools for example for prediction of RNA structure and for searching after RNA structure in genomic and transcriptomic sequences. A key challenge is to make the tools communicate, that is to make them interoperable.

Job description

Focus will be on creating infrastructure for RNA tools to interface with one another including tools for structural RNA alignments and tools that involve searching for non-coding and structured RNAs in genomic and transcriptomic data. The work will also include making pre-generated data annotation accessible in relation to the tools infrastructure.

Qualification Requirements

The candidate should have:

• Documented scientific qualifications by a PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science or similar

• General knowledge about RNA structure folding algorithms

• Very strong expertise and experience with script language such as Perl and Python (or similar)

• Strong experience with the linux/unix environment, command lines and shell scripting

• Experience with at least one of the programming languages C, C++ or Java

• Experience with SQL databases

• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English

• Demonstrated capacity for effective team work

• Possess good interpersonal skills

Desirable criteria

• Experience with statistical analysis

• Experience with web technologies such as HTML and PHP

Relationships

The Postdoc will report to Prof Jan Gorodkin, Director of Center for non-coding RNA in Technology and Health.

The Postdoc will interact with staff at all levels, both internally and externally, regarding relevant research topics.

Employment conditions

Employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Government and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The gross basic salary range for Postdoctoral Fellows is DKK 32,000 to DKK 33,700 per month (around EUR 4,200-4,500) (level 6 to 8). To the basic salary a supplement could be negotiated, dependent on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. An additional 17.1% monthly contribution to pension will be paid by the employer.

The position is time limited for a 20 months period with a 37 hour working week.

Researchers recruited from abroad can apply for a special tax scheme – named Researcher Taxation. With this scheme you can choose a flat rate tax of 26% for a period of 60 months. An additional mandatory 8 % labour market social contribution will be added. In order to be covered by the flat rate tax of 26 %, it is a requirement that you have not been tax liable to Denmark 10 years prior to your employment at the University of Copenhagen.
