Job offer description

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet

Lyngby-Taarbæk, 1 stilling

DTU Fotonik works with all areas of photonic engineering, including a strong focus on optical communications. We are hereby announcing a PhD position within the topic of information theory and regenerative and nonlinear transmission in optical communication. This project is part of the newly established centre of excellence Silicon Photonics for Optical Communications (SPOC) funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. Starting date 1st of February 2016 or as soon as possible. Project description We are looking for a candidate to work on nonlinear optical communication channel techniques for approaching the capacity of such channels.

The work will include studies on regeneration and analysis and design of novel schemes for capacity reaching communication using signal processing and communication and information theory.

The work will involve detailed studies of capacity and uncovering potentials for improving achievable rates for linear and nonlinear optical channels with a focus on constructive approaches. The work will also include development and characterization of novel methods and physical components for communication, and of schemes for nonlinear and novel communication channels developed within the SPOC project. The use of coded modulation communication schemes will be one approach to increase spectral efficiency and approach capacity.

The PhD project will involve both theoretical and experimental studies and joint experiments with other SPOC team members. The candidate should address fundamental communication limits of optical communication and strive to devise viable schemes to approach the limits.

The PhD project will be part of the newly started research centre of excellence SPOC and will be in close collaboration with activities within the centre, including activities on information theory, capacity and advanced coding. Experimental demonstrations of selected devised schemes in optical transmission will be an integral part of this project.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.Good communication skills in written and spoken English are a must.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval: only candidates with an above the average marks are accepted in the program. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Assessment

The assessment of the applicants will be made by Prof. Søren Forchhammer, Prof. Leif Katsuo Oxenløwe and Associate Professor Darko Ziba.

Application procedure

Please submit your online application no later than January 17, 2016. Applications must be submitted as one PDF file containing all materials to be given consideration. To apply, please open the link "Apply online," complete the online application form, and attach all your materials in English in one PDF file. The file must include:

•A letter motivating the application (cover letter)

•Curriculum vitae

•Grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma (an official translation into English)

•Excel sheet with translation of grades to the Danish grading system (see guidelines and excel spreadsheet here)

Candidates may apply prior to obtaining their MSc degree, but cannot begin before having received it.

Applications and enclosures received after the deadline will not be considered.
