PhD scholarship at the Danish Stem Cell Center (DanStem)

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen

A PhD scholarship is available at Danstem

The Danish Stem Cell Center (Danstem) is a research center at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. The overall scientific goal of the center is to develop new stem cell-based therapeutic approaches, currently in the area of diabetes and cancer, addressing basic questions in stem cell and developmental biology and seeking to identify the factors that govern the development of different cell types in the body. Project description:

Activation of the Notch receptor by its ligands is subject to regulation by feedback loops. The feedback loops result in oscillatory expression of certain Notch pathway components and its associated transcription factors. This mechanism has so far been shown to operate in neural stem cells and during somite development, but certain observations suggest that it may also be important also for pancreatic development.

The purpose of this project is to use translational reporter mice and bimolecular complementation assays to monitor protein and protein complex levels in real-time in vivo and to employ cell-based assays and mouse genetics in order to understand the underlying mechanism of oscillations and their role in pancreatic cell fate decisions.

The project is part of a larger systematic effort to understand the many roles of Notch signalling in embryonic development. The candidate will join a team of investigators and should be highly motivated, fluent in English, and should have experience with mouse ES cells, cell-based assays such as IP and Western blotting, as well as bimolecular complementation techniques and FACS. Prior experience with mouse developmental genetics is an advantage.

Qualifications:

Candidates are required to have a master’s degree in biology, biochemistry, medicine or human biology, or similar, and a general understanding of developmental biology.

Strong motivation and very good scientific skills are essential.

Practical experience is considered an advantage.

Good communication skills, both oral and written.

Employment Conditions:

The successful candidate will be offered a full-time PhD Research Position in the Danstem PhD Training Scheme that upon successful completion of formal PhD study culminates in the award of a PhD.  Employment as a PhD student is conditioned upon a positive assessment of the candidate´s research performance and enrollment in the Graduate School at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. The PhD study must be completed in accordance with the ministerial orders from the Ministry of Education on the PhD degree and the University´s rules on achieving the degree. Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Government and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).  In addition to the basic salary a monthly contribution to a pension fund is added (17.1% of the salary).
