Lyngby-Taarbæk, 1 stilling

The PhD position will be hosted at the CAPEC-PROCESS research center of DTU Chemical Engineering department.

It is an early stage researcher (ESR) position and part of “ModLife: Advancing Modelling for Process-Product Innovation, Optimization, Monitoring and Control in Life Science Industries” – a H2020-MSCA-ITN-2015 project funded by EU Executive Research Agency (ERA). More information about the project can be accessed at modlife.eu.

Responsibilities and tasks

•Objectives: (i) to develop model-based enabling technology that integrates library of sensors and measurements technology, validated model library and control and monitoring algorithms, and (ii) to support pharmaceuticals industry in optimization of manufacturing processes at early stage process development cycle including process design to control and monitoring strategies.

•Expected results: (1) in silico design and optimization of processing/production technology in life sciences, (2) identification of the workflow and supporting tools and methods needed to design and validate optimal operation, control and monitoring strategies, (3) a library and database for models, sensors and optimization/control algorithms, (4) quantitative risk assessment to quantify the risk associated with uncertainties in data and modelling, (5) demonstration on selected processes from pharmaceutical production in collaboration with industrial partners Janssen Pharmaceutica and Bayer Technology Services.

•Planned secondments: (1) Janssen Pharmaceutica, 1 month, pharmaceutical manufacturing; (2) University of Strathclyde, 2 months, measurement and monitoring of pharmaceutical processes; (3) Bayer Technology Services, 1 month, biopharmaceuticals production.

Supervisors: Prof. Gürkan Sin (DTU), Dr. Mahir Ozdemir (Janssen Pharmaceutica), Dr. Alison Nordon (University of Strathclyde).

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Assessment

The assessment of the applicants will be made by Prof. Gürkan Sin, Prof. Jens Abildskov and Dr. Alexandr Zubov. The following competences are desirable in the candidates:

•Modelling and simulation (property and process modelling), numerical methods, mathematical programming (optimization).

•Process synthesis and design, separation processes, process and energy integration.

•Interest in development of prototype software/simulation environment.

Since the positions is ESR position funded by H2020-MSCA-ITN-2015, the following eligibility and mobility criteria holds:

•The candidate must be — at the date of recruitment — an ‘early stage researcher’ (i.e. in the first four years of his/her research career and not have a doctoral degree).

•At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.

The interview of the shortlisted candidates to take place right after the submission deadline. The successful candidates are to start employment on March 1, 2016.
